On Thursday 19 December, Eckington School celebrated the remarkable career of Mr Savage, the school's beloved religious education teacher, with an emotional send-off on the last day of term. After 36 years of dedicated service, Mr Savage is retiring, leaving behind a legacy that has touched the lives of thousands of students and colleagues alike.
The day – also a non-uniform day - ended with a heartwarming surprise as the entire student body and staff formed a secret guard of honour at home time, applauding Mr Savage as he walked through the school gates for the final time as a teacher. It was a fitting tribute to a man who has been an integral part of the Eckington School community for nearly four decades.
Mr Cronin, Headteacher of Eckington School, praised Mr Savage’s unwavering commitment and impact, saying: “On behalf of the entire school community, I would like to thank Mr Savage for his incredible dedication, compassion, and wisdom over the years. He has been a guiding light for our students, inspiring them not only in religious education but in life. The overwhelming number of heartfelt messages from students, staff, and members of the community speaks volumes about the positive influence he has had. We wish him a very happy and fulfilling retirement – he will be deeply missed.”
Mr Savage’s career at Eckington School began in 1988, and he has spent every day since shaping young minds with his thoughtful teaching and kind-hearted nature. Known for his ability to make complex topics accessible and engaging, Mr Savage fostered a classroom environment that encouraged respect, understanding, and curiosity about the world’s religions and philosophies.
The outpouring of gratitude from the school community has been extraordinary. Former students have shared memories of his inspirational lessons, while current pupils spoke of his patience and the life lessons he imparted. Colleagues, too, have expressed their admiration, describing Mr Savage as a mentor, a friend, and a cornerstone of the school.
As Mr Savage embarks on his well-deserved retirement, the Eckington School community wishes him every happiness. While he may no longer be in the classroom, his influence will undoubtedly live on in the hearts and minds of all those he has taught and inspired.
